Cyber liability insurance in Spokane

Covers the cost of a breach, a ransomware incident, or a wire transfer sent to the wrong person.

Small businesses are targeted precisely because they are small. The average incident is not a sophisticated attack — it is an invoice redirected by email, or an employee who clicked something. Cyber coverage pays for the response, the notification, the downtime and the liability.

Washington breach notification law

Washington's data breach statute requires notice to affected consumers, and to the Attorney General when the breach reaches 500 Washington residents, generally within 30 days. Notification is not optional and not cheap — the mailing, the call centre and the credit monitoring are usually the largest line item in a small breach. Cyber policies pay for exactly this.

What carriers now require

Cyber underwriting has tightened sharply. Expect to be asked about multi-factor authentication on email and remote access, offline or immutable backups, endpoint detection, and whether you still run end-of-life software. Businesses without MFA are increasingly declined outright. Getting these in place before applying improves both availability and price.

Who holds the risk

If you store customer payment details, patient records, employee social security numbers, or client financial data, you hold the risk — including when a vendor loses it on your behalf. Outsourcing the IT does not outsource the liability.

What Cyber Liability covers

  • Ransomware response, negotiation and recovery
  • Breach notification and credit monitoring costs
  • Lost income while systems are down
  • Funds transfer fraud and social engineering loss
What this looks like

Someone spoofs your bookkeeper’s email and a $48,000 supplier payment goes to a fraudulent account. Cyber coverage with a funds transfer endorsement reimburses the loss and pays the forensic work to find out how the mailbox was compromised.

Cyber Liability FAQs

Sometimes a small sublimit is, often $25,000 or $50,000 — which does not go far in a real incident. Standalone cyber policies or a full endorsement provide meaningful limits and, importantly, access to an incident response team on day one.

Small businesses are the preferred target, because the controls are weaker and the payouts are still worth collecting. Most incidents are opportunistic and automated rather than aimed at a specific company.

Most policies do, subject to limits, sanctions screening and the insurer approving the payment. More valuable is the response team — negotiators, forensics and legal counsel — who handle incidents weekly rather than once a decade.
